Chihuly at the MFA

There is a Chihuly exhibit that is now open at the Museum of Fine Arts.  I saw a Chihuly exhibit at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh a few years ago, and it is still one of the most impressive shows I have seen.  I can’t wait to go see it in Boston, and will be sure to post pictures after.  If you are in Boston between now and August, go check it out!

Here is a photo of the piece that is still in the Phipps:

Patagonia Jacket

This Patagonia jacket has been a lifesaver for Boston’s spring time weather.  While most of the country has been or is starting to experience summer temperatures, it is still pretty rainy/chilly here.  Even though I usually stick with my signature black, my mom convinced me to buy in the green to spice things up a bit.  I am pretty brand loyal to North Face, but if you are in the market for a Spring or Fall jacket I suggest checking it out!

End of the Semester

The end of a semester is stressful/interesting at any college, especially when you are heading into your last year of college.  Make way senior year.  As an Emerson marketing student, we tend to have large scale team projects as our final.  With the help of my teammates, we completed:

  • Sales promotion campaign for Cape Pond Ice where the client came for the final presentation
  • Media plan for Netflix
  • Project to convince CMO’s to use Emerson College as a test lab for upcoming products and market research

I also had to write an individual research paper about the new Federal Menu Labeling law that is being implemented across the US (for my health communication class).

I have to get back to my current distraction (watching Castle), but here is to wishing I was in Scotland..

Art & Copy

Recently I watched the PBS documentary Art & Copy, which is about the advertising world through the eyes of some of the biggest agencies and most influential people in the industry.  For people who do not study advertising on a day to day basis, this is a fascinating look into what goes on behind creating a campaign. For those of you who do study/work in the advertising/media world, this is a reassuring film that demonstrates how important and successful advertising campaigns can become.

I encourage everyone to watch this documentary, and it is even on Watch Instantly on Netflix.  Throughout the film there are facts shown about the influence and how much money is spent on various parts of advertising.  Here are some of the facts that I found most impressive:

  • “The global advertising business will exceed $544 billion by 2010.”
  • “In the 1970s, the average city dweller received about 1,000 advertising messages every day. Today it’s closer to 5,000.”
  • “Food companies spent $32 billion on advertising in 2008.  Car companies spent more than $15 billion.”
  • “A 30 second ad on American Idol costs $750,000 in 2009.”

Do you think advertising is influential enough to be spending these vast amounts of money?
